Until 2022, the EU accounted for more than half of Russian plywood supplies abroad and one-sixth to the USA. In 2022, direct exports of Russian products to the EU altogether ceased, and to the USA, they decreased significantly due to the introduced protective duty. The United States did not impose prohibitive sanctions against the Russian timber industry. Still, in the spring of 2022, it abolished the most favored nation regime in trade with Russia and Belarus. As a result, the import duty on Russian plywood increased from 0 to 50%. In 2023, the largest plywood importers from the Russian Federation were Egypt, China, and Türkiye. Exports of Russian plywood to China in 2023 increased 2.1 times year-on-year to 239,200 cubic meters. Compared to 2021, the volume increased by 3.3 times. In 2023, Russia became the largest exporter of plywood to China – it accounted for 81.6% of physical volumes. Plywood exports from Russia in 2023 amounted to approximately 1.4-1.6 million m3 versus 2 million m3 in 2022 and 3.05 million m3. in 2021.
For clients interested in purchasing birch plywood in the Russian price niche, but not produced in Russia and made from non-Russian raw materials, we are ready to offer high-quality flooring plywood, furniture frame grade plywood, and calibrated platforms.
